After I had just left Dominion supermarket on Ropewalk Lane
a little while ago here in St. John's, Newfoundland,
I spotted a bright white all white (top and bottom and including
wing tips) seagull. It was I am pretty sure the same species
but about 2/3 the size of the one described in
http://www.nfld.com/~dalton/luthien.html
so perhaps that one was Jonathan Livingstone Seagull
and this one today was Luthien Seagull , if the males
of that species are bigger, but today's may just be
younger.

Anyone know what species it is, and how rare it is?
It must be rare since I haven't seen one for sure
since February 1996.

Also how would you interpret this sign of today?

Also for those on the Harry Potter group well it
wasn't an owl though (those deliver the mail in
the Harry Potter stories, right?) I wouldn't
mind the Lilith Fair boss delivering me some
mail. (Lilith means screechowl, also in the
Welsh Mabinogion Blodeuwedd is turned into
an owl when she took on too much Math, ha).

Many happy returns,
David

oops actually Gwydion turned her into an owl,
not Math, but Math and Gwydion formed her
into human form out of flowers

Did you want a serious interpretation... or the Newfie one? <g>

I am now pretty sure from scanning images of Ivory Gull
on http://images.google.com that both the February
1996 larger one and the recent smaller one were
ivory gulls , and hence Seagull1 on my web page is
Ivory Gull.

But in scanning for seagull info today I stumbled on
the following bit from

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/6181/gulls.htm :

"To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying."
-Legolas' Song of the Sea (The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien)

Why did none of you mention that to me so far in
this thread or in 1997 when I posted to many
of these groups? Are you not really Tolkien
fans, or are you dense, not to immediately
blab out the connection of Legolas to gulls?
(Of course those on the Harry Potter group I
can forgive but not those on the other three
groups, since I have also been a Tolkien fan
since 1975, age 11.)

If some of you knew the gull connection in
The Lord of the Rings why did you not post
about it to remind me and other readers?
I am beginning to doubt the intelligence
of others on newsgroups, little is being shown.

I did not know about the bit about Luthien
and Beren being on the gravestones of
J.R.R.'s wife and J.R.R. until my Silmarillion movies
threads of a few months ago, certainly
not in 1996.

It sounds like an Albino of some gull species.

For what it's worth:
I can't find my old field identification book,
but as i recall, the only pure white species
of gull is the ivory gull. I don't know the
range of the species, except that it includes
at least part of the east coast of North America.
As far as "younger" in reference to size, gulls
reach their adult size while still in their
"juvinile" colors, generally grey and brown,
so a young ivory gull (or any other species)
flying around with it's adult colors wouln't be
smaller than an older gull.
In any case, to paste a question that I have
already posted in another thread ---

This is probably off the subject, but this thread
reminds me of something I have wondered about:
Does anybody know if the extended edition of
the ROTK movie will show Legolas'
standard teleri reaction to exposure to the sea,
his (for want of a better way of describing it)
"change from a wood-elf into a sea-elf"?
